Who is Vaibhav Suryavanshi?

Cricket has seen many child prodigies over the decades, but few have arrived with the sheer force and frequency of record-breaking that Vaibhav Suryavanshi has demonstrated. Born on 27 March 2011 in Tajpur, a small town in Samastipur district, Bihar, this left-handed explosive opener has redefined what teenage talent looks like in modern cricket.

At an age when most teenagers are focused on school exams, Vaibhav has already played Ranji Trophy, debuted in the IPL, smashed a 35-ball century against seasoned international bowlers, and guided India U19 to World Cup glory — all before turning 15. His story is not just a cricket story. It is a story of belief, sacrifice, and extraordinary natural ability.

Early Life & Family

Vaibhav's cricket journey started almost before he could walk properly. His father Sanjiv Suryavanshi, an aspiring cricketer himself, recognised his son's passion for the game at the age of four. To nurture this spark, the family made enormous sacrifices — including, reportedly, selling a portion of their land to fund his training.

When Vaibhav turned eight, his father enrolled him at Manish Ojha's GenNex Cricket Academy in Patna — approximately 100 km from their home in Samastipur. Father and son would travel this distance on alternate days for training sessions. His coach Ojha described the young Vaibhav as a "quick learner" with an instinctive understanding of the game far beyond his age.

"He is a quick learner. The hunger in his eyes and the way he processes the game is something I have not seen in many players at that age."

— Manish Ojha, Childhood Coach
Junior Cricket & Breakthrough

By the age of 12, Vaibhav was already dominating junior cricket far older than his years. He played in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Bihar's U19 side at just 12, emerging as the top run-scorer in the tournament — a remarkable feat that propelled him directly into Bihar's senior Ranji Trophy squad.

He also has an unbeaten 332 to his name in the Randhir Verma Tournament (a U19 competition in Bihar), showcasing the kind of innings-building ability that comes with rare cricketing intelligence.

Domestic Career

Vaibhav made his First-Class debut (Ranji Trophy) in January 2024 for Bihar against Mumbai, at the age of just 12 years and 284 days — making him one of the youngest first-class cricketers in Indian history.

In December 2024, he became the youngest Indian player to play List A cricket when he debuted for Bihar in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Madhya Pradesh, aged 13 years and 269 days.

But it was the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy that truly announced his genius in the 50-over format. Against Arunachal Pradesh, Vaibhav smashed 190 off 84 balls, including a stunning 36-ball century that broke AB de Villiers' record for the fastest 150 in List A cricket (achieved in 59 balls). At just 14 years and 272 days, he became the youngest centurion in men's List A cricket.

India Under-19 Career

Vaibhav first represented India U19 in September 2024 against Australia U19. He announced himself with a century off 58 balls in the Youth Test in Chennai — the fastest hundred by an Indian U19 player, and the second-fastest in U19 international cricket history. He was run out for 104.

At the 2024 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, he contributed 176 runs at an average of 44, helping India reach the final. In the 2025 ACC U19 Asia Cup, he produced a sensational tournament, amassing 261 runs in 5 matches including a breathtaking 171 against UAE — the highest individual score by an Indian in the tournament's history — while also smashing a record 14 sixes in that single innings.

In November 2025, playing for India A against UAE in the Asia Cup Rising Stars T20, he blazed 144 off 42 balls, bringing up his hundred off just 32 balls, making him the youngest male cricketer to score a T20 century for a national side.

The crowning glory came at the 2026 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, where Vaibhav piled up 439 runs in 7 matches across the tournament. In the final against England U19, he produced an extraordinary 175 off 80 balls (15 fours, 15 sixes), guiding India to World Cup glory. He was named Player of the Tournament.

"In the World Cup final, I just backed my natural game. When you play freely, good things happen."

— Vaibhav Suryavanshi
IPL Career — Rajasthan Royals

The moment that changed Indian cricket forever came at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in November 2024. At just 13 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.10 crore, becoming the youngest player ever to earn an IPL contract in the tournament's history.

His IPL debut came on 19 April 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants, when Sanju Samson was ruled out injured. Stepping in as an Impact Player, the 14-year-old hit his very first ball in the IPL — off Shardul Thakur — for a six. He went on to score 34 off 20 balls, instantly announcing himself to the world.

Then, on 28 April 2025, came the knock that will be talked about for generations. Against Gujarat Titans in Jaipur, Vaibhav dismantled one of IPL's best bowling attacks to score 101 off 38 balls, including 11 sixes. His century arrived off just 35 deliveries — the second-fastest hundred in IPL history after Chris Gayle's 30-ball blitz in 2013. At 14 years and 32 days, he became the youngest centurion in the history of men's T20 cricket.

He finished IPL 2025 with 252 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 206.56 — numbers that would be exceptional for any player, let alone a 14-year-old. Rajasthan Royals unsurprisingly retained him for the 2026 season.

In IPL 2026, the momentum has continued. In early April 2026, he scored 52 off 17 balls against CSK, followed by 31 off 18 and 39 off 14 in subsequent matches. Across both IPL seasons, he has now accumulated 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 41+ with a strike rate well over 180.

Playing Style & Strengths

What makes Vaibhav Suryavanshi genuinely special is not just his age — it is the quality and intelligence of his batting. A left-handed opening batsman, he plays with a freedom and fearlessness that veteran batters spend careers trying to rediscover. His idol is the great Brian Lara, and one can see traces of that influence — the flamboyance, the on-side dominance, the ability to destroy bowling attacks through sheer timing.

His bat speed and power generation are extraordinary for his frame. He consistently hits deliveries that would trouble senior cricketers, and his ability to pick length early allows him to hit from the first ball — as he demonstrated when he hit his first-ever IPL delivery for six. His technique against pace and spin alike appears robust, and his mental composure under high-pressure situations — scoring a World Cup final hundred — goes far beyond his years.
